St. Albans Chess Club - Silver Rook 2010
2010 Competition

The competition completed its league stage on Monday 29th March 2010. The Semi-Final results were

Jeremy Fraser Mitchell 1-0 John Simmons
                                        Mike Lexton 0-1 Jacek Winter

The first result of the Lexton - Winter game was a draw so the players agreed to decide the tie by two rapid play games.  Jacek Winter was the winner from this encounter, so will be considered to have earned one point from then encounter.  Only the match played at the normal rate will be graded.  The final will be:

Jeremy Fraser Mitchell v Jacek Winter

Jeremy gets white by virtue of having scored higher in the league stage.

The results of the league stage may be viewed by clicking on 2010 results on the left of this page.

For those who did not qualify but wish to complete their league games then please feel welcome and send the results to the organiser for publication.

on his first win of the Silver Rook
2011 Competition
I have been asked by several competitor to revise the format to ensure that the competition ensures that all the highest graded players actually play against each other in the competition, which does not happen with the current league system. Please see proposal below.

Proposals for the 2011 competition to be put to members at the AGM in June
The committee discussed how to implement the above requirement and proposes to introduce a two league system, similar to the Davis Cup, with a Silver Rook League and a Challengers League.  The winner of the Silver Rook League would be the Silver Rook holder for that year and the Winner of the Challengers League would hold the Challengers trophy and gain automatic admission to the Silver Rook League for the next season.

Silver Rook League - This would comprise 7 players:  The top three from the previous Silver Rook league (for 2011, this would be the two Silver Rook finalists plus Mike Lexton), plus the winners of the Challengers League.  The three remaining Silver Rook League places would go to the 3 highest graded entrants (for 2011, this would be the 4 highest graded players since there is no Challengers League champion).
Challengers League - The remaining competitors would enter the Challengers League.

The proposal from the Committee is that the Silver Rook competition be run on the Silver Rook League / Challengers League as described above.

Should this motion fail then members will be asked to vote for either i) the present league system or ii) a Swiss competition.

The committee requests that all members who do not intend to enter the competition abstain from voting.
