Turner Prize
Introduced in 2005 and named after Tony Turner, a long time supporter and secretary of St. Albans Chess club, this prize is awarded to the player scoring the largest number of points in all competitive, inter-club games. In the event of a tie, the award goes to the player playing the more or the most games. Congratulations to Patrick Fitzgerald who wins the Turner prize for 2006, just pipping Ray Claret and David Phillips by dint of number of games played.  Ray Claret came back to win in 2007. Tim Acton pipped Neil Willmott and David Phillips through having played more games. It is highly encouraging to see Neil in contention since he won the Black King in 2006

Black King
Although all members of the club take their chess seriously, we do like to think that we have a lighter side. The Black King trophy, introduced in 2006 and destined to become a much not to be sought after award, goes to the player who has lost most competitive inter-club games in the season. We now believe that this award has run its course so we made the final award to Ian Cross, a good sport who accepted the award in perpetuity.

The initial award goes to Neil Willmott, who beat off strong competition from several players in the club, who would all like to remain nameless and some of whom sit on your committee. 2007 also saw keen competition with Terry Douse just pipping all comers.
