Welcome to the website of St Albans Chess Club.
If you would like to play chess either in matches or just socially then you are assured of a warm welcome. We meet from 7:30 at LRERA (London Road Estate Residents Association) on Cell Barnes Lane off Drake's Drive. The venue has a licensed bar. Club nights run every week of the year, except bank holidays. In July and August we move to the White Lion pub on Sopwell Lane. Aside from the regular club nights, handicap tournaments are played at Christmas and the last club night of June and the club champion gives a simultaneous display in September. We have six teams in the seven divisions of the Hertfordshire League (each playing twelve or fourteen matches per year). We also enter teams into the county's four knockout tournaments (open, U140, U120, U100). We have a very active junior branch, the Early Knights Junior Chess Club, which runs from September to the end of May at the LRERA venue prior to the main club meeting from 6.15. It is open to all school-age children, boys and girls, of any ability and coaching is provided.
