Welcome to the website of St Albans Chess Club. If you would like to play chess either in matches or just socially then you are assured of a warm welcome. We meet on Monday evenings from 7:30 at LRERA (London Road Estate Residents Association) on Cell Barnes Lane off Drake's Drive. The venue has a licensed bar. Club nights run every week of the year, except bank holidays. In July and August we move to the White Lion pub on Sopwell Lane. Aside from the regular club nights, handicap tournaments are played at Christmas and the last club night of June, and the club champion gives a simultaneous display in September. We have seven teams in the seven divisions of the Hertfordshire League (each playing twelve or fourteen matches per year). We also enter teams into the county's four knockout tournaments (open, U160, U140 and U100). There is an internal club championship for the Silver Rook trophy and an annual twenty-board match against Watford (the Cheshire Board).For further details, please contact enquiries@stalbanscc.org.uk
It is with great sadness that the club has learned of the death of Norman Lavers on 30th June 2010. Norman played for St Albans for nearly 60 years, winner the Silver Rook 5 times. Norman also won our handicap competition in 1950, only to repeat his success in 2000. He was also a successful member of the Hertfordshire County team We mourn the loss of one of our finest and our sympathies go out to his family

Congratulations to Jacek Winter who won the Silver Rook for the first time, beating Jeremy Fraser-Mitchell in the final. Jacek will revive the tradition of taking on all St Albans players in a simultaneous in September next season -watch this space for details
